Wedding Magic

I love weddings. Love them. I planned countless 'dream days' in the 4 years I was engaged to my husband. Garden weddings, vintage weddings, old Hollywood weddings. No theme or color palette left unturned. The trill of the first married kiss, the party, the personality, the LOVE. All of it is quite an addiction for me. With all the wedding sparkle in my eyes, I thought wedding photography was something I was destined to do. Unfortunately when actually getting into being the primary shooter in my first few weddings there was pressure and stress I simply wasn't prepared for. Oh sure, I knew getting into it there would be stress, but I didn't think it would take the joy out of it for me, and it did. I missed the creativity and the magic that I felt, well, simply too busy with everything else to provide.
That is where this new 'season' for me begins. I want to capture the magic again. I want to be creative, and I want to give back, so for now, and by now I'm not giving a time frame, it could mean this month, this summer, this year, but for now I will be second shooting weddings for free. Yes, a second (or 3rd depending on what you are already getting from another photog) of eyes, a second camera, a second take on your day for free. Now don't get me wrong, while I would love to I simply don't have the time or the money to do this for everyone. In fact, I won't be doing it for most of the people that contact me about it, but I do want to do it, as much as I can. I want weddings that fit my style and my inspirations, brides who get me and what I'm about and where I want to be in my photography.
*I'm looking for outdoor weddings, for one thing. I'm most comfortable working with natural light and those are the types of weddings I want to shoot now and always.
*I'm looking for weddings out of the ordinary. Full of whimsy, DIY, personality. Full of magic.
*You must have a primary {and professional} photographer. I will not be providing the bulk of your wedding photographs and someone in the business must be getting paid as your photographer, and they also must be okay with me second shooting with them. Some may like the idea and it may take pressure off of them, some photographers already have other people working with them and wouldn't care for my presence. You must speak with them first! I don't want to agree to working with you then show up as a surprise to the photographer you have hired.
*I must be able to move around as I wish during the ceremony and reception to get the shots I'm looking for.
*I cannot promise you a specific amount of photos or a timeline in which you will get them. As they will be free I will give you the best photos I take and I will work on them as it fits in with the rest of my schedule.

If you are interested in my services, please email me {or comment} with the following information. The more information you give, the more likely you will to be chosen for free 2nd shooing services.

*What is your wedding date?
*Who is your primary photographer? What is their contact information? {FB is fine}
* How did you meet your fiancée'? What makes them special? What makes you special as a couple?
*What is your wedding theme {or color palette or inspirations}? This is going to be the main determining factor in what weddings I choose to work on. Send me photos of what you are dreaming of. Inspirations boards, colors, flowers. Tell me about your location, special things about your day, what makes it magical, why it's going to be different from everyone else's. Why it's a must have in my portfolio. Use this time to sparkle. To amaze me. {Don't forget to send me a photo of yourself and your hubby/wife to be!}

I look forward to hearing from you. I look forward to finding my love for weddings again through your beautiful days. I look forward to hearing about your special day and more importantly I look forward to being apart of it. <3

What to Wear Wednesday-Build on your Basics

Welcome to our first 'Wardrobe Wednesday'! I have people all the time asking me what they should wear to their sessions and any tips I may have. Well, now I'll be answering your questions week by week! This week our article is from Morgan Dawson Photography and we're going back to basics! I know when you are investing in photos sometimes investing in a new wardrobe for the family to wear in them isn't practical. Here's were we build on our basics! We'll take on the women first!

I admit it – I have a uniform that I wear almost every day.

{dark jeans and white tank} + {X over tank} = {my outfit}

If it sounds lazy – and some days, ma

ybe it is! – remember that people like Bobby Brown and Vera Wang also have “uniforms” (have you EVER seen them wearing something other than black?). The trick to keeping this highly functional outfit fresh is to change up the {X}. For example, I can throw on a cozy sweater in the morning to wear while I edit with my coffee, swap the sweater for a white cardigan and fun necklace when I head out for a shoot, then make one more change into a fitted jacket and a pair of hoop earrings before meeting friends for a drink.

How easy is that – three totally different l

ooks by changing out one piece of clothing and a few accessories!

Will this idea work for your next photo shoot? Absolutely! Rather than spend money on separate head-to-toe outfits, you can either save some dough by only picking up a few new pieces, or splurge a little on one or two killer tops. The other reason I love the idea of wearing a uniform to your shoot is how easy it is to change your look. You can bring along a small bag and make a quick change without having to look for a bathroom or car to change in. Not only will this get you more looks for your shoot, but your photographer will love knowing that the location for your session doesn’t need to revolve around a nearby spot to change.

To give you an idea of what I’m talking abo

ut, I put together a few different outfit ideas that will look great over your jeans and tank. But let’s make sure we have the basics set first.

The white staple tank shown below is my all-time favorite, can’t-live-without-it, should-have-bought-a-few-more top. No lie. I actually bought one for my Mother as part of her Oprah’s Morgan’s Favorite Things Christmas gift (which included a p

air of pants from Lands End that I wear all the time – message me if you’re curious). While a white tank is something you can pick up anywhere, I love this one because:

  • the material is thin enough to layer and not get warm, but thick enough to not be see-through
  • wide shoulder straps mean your bra straps won’t show (a no-no for any picture)
  • you can wear this multiple times without it stretching out (great for travel!)
  • wash after wash it still looks great

Ok – enough about the tank!

Jeans. Everyone has them, but just make sure what you’re wearing actually fits you. If they’re too tight or sag in the butt (you know what I’m talking about), you really should invest in a new pair. I secretly hate shopping on my own, so I like to go to a store where the salespeople will be brutally honest and not let me leave with a pair that looks bad. With SO many options – low rise, mid rise, skinny, bootleg, curvy – you can definitely find a pair that fits you. And for color, a darker wash always looks good, and can transition easily to an evening pant.

Since the majority of your outfit is set, have fun with your {X} top. Be bold with colors and patterns. Wear some sweaters or tops buttoned up (maybe with a belt) or open and layered. Mix in fun jewelry and accessories like a scarf or hat (I’m obse

ssed with newsboy caps lately) – and voila! Picture perfect outfits in a snap:-)

Now for the men!

In my last Wardrobe Wednesday post I talked to women about building your outfit around two closet staples - a white tank and jeans. But what about the guys? Let’s start with the same basic idea: start with what you already have and go from there. In this case, I chose jeans and a white dress shirt.

It can really work, too, without being even a bit boring!

First, the basics.

Let’s start with a pair of dark wash jeans that really fit well. Again, no saggy pants or faded dad jeans. If your man doesn’t have at least one pair of nice darker jeans, get thee to a store pronto and make him TRY THEM ON. I’ve absolutely made my husband try on jeans before buying them, only to have a few women critiquing his figure to make sure the fit works. Might he be embarrassed for a minute or two? Perhaps. Will he leave with a killer pair of jean? Absolutely. Totally worth it.

(Husband’s note: You get used to hearing your w

ife ask the other women to check out your ass.)

The white dress shirt. Again, this MUST fit well. The good thing is that no matter what his size, you can find a cut that works. I suggest going to a store like Men’s Wearhouse where they have a large selection of special cuts (like athletic or slim). My other suggestion – and this comes from the wife of someone who wears a white dress shirt five days a week – is to buy one that is wrinkle or iron free. These aren’t a myth or made of some weird material. I honestly haven’t ironed a dress shirt in YEARS. My newest favorite white shirt can be found below in the shopping guide.

Now, let’s jazz this up a bit.

Even if he only wears the jeans and white shirt, little things like great shoes, a belt and watch can make a huge difference. I almost always suggest rolling the sleeves. Not only will this make the look a little more lived-in and real, but it will also make him feel a little more relaxed. Show even more style with a pair of geek chic glasses or a light scarf.

Consider taking the outfit one step further by adding a loose tie (or bow tie for the adventurous). Again, you can make it more casual by keeping the top few buttons undone on the dress shirt. Keep in mind that this is a great opportunity to show a little color, or compliment something that another person is wearing. The trend in ties now is skinny, skinny, skinny.

Don’t be afraid to layer things over the shirt. Vests look cool and can be worn with or without a tie. If the example below is a little too modern, consider a basic sleeveless golf sweater vest like this from Nike Golf. Button-down and full-zip cardigans are hot now, but you can’t go wrong with a zip-neck mock sweater as well. And finally, jackets. These can look super cool and casual with a slightly unbuttoned dress shirt and jeans. Depending on the material, you may even be able to roll up the sleeves a little. Go with a more formal look by adding a simple tie and maybe even cufflinks.

PREPARING FOR YOUR SHOOT – DRESS TO MATCH THE SOFA?

Yes, you heard right! When choosing clothing for your family photos with me, dress to match the sofa! Think about the end result you’re aiming for by having your photos taken by a professional. Is it to have a large canvas over the fireplace? A series of small canvases leading up the stairs? Prints which will be framed in black? You will get maximum ‘punch’ from your new artwork if it looks like it really fits in the space you have placed it. If you have a shabby chic style in your lounge, putting your children in red probably wouldn’t look so great over the fireplace. Whether your style is contemporary, classic, victorian or has an island getaway feel, consider it when choosing the wardrobe to be used in your shoot.

If you want help deciding what direction to go with the things I have talked about here, get in touch before your session and I can help you! The goal is to create beautiful art, where your family is the centerpiece, which will really fit in your home.

{OTHER TIPS TO PREPARE FOR YOUR SHOOT}

The Only Don’t!

Don’t put your little girl in a pony tail. Take my word for it – she will look bald!

Bring props

Cuddly toys precious to your children or things that will help them feel comfortable. Whether for adults or children, props can be great inspiration for the direction your shoot takes. Anything can be great – musical instruments, a guitar amp, hats, dress-up clothes for the kids, your high heels for your little girl. Let your imagination flow and bring whatever you want, however large or small. Sometimes, the most bizarre things can really be great.

Hair & Makeup

When doing your hair and makeup for your photos, remember that more is better. Photography tones down the effect of makeup by about half so if you don’t feel like you’re wearing too much, you’re not wearing enough. Even red lipstick might not look so bold in photos and hair can look flat if you don’t ‘big it up’ a bit. A little backcombing never hurt!

Makeup for the kids?

Little girls love playing with makeup and it can be an excellent prop.

Accessories

Especially for kids, a little accessory can really make the close-ups grand. I especially love hair things on little girls. Keep their hair down if possible (so they don’t look bald if their pony isn’t showing) and give them a hair band, a bow, a flower, a woven ring of daisies or a really pretty wolly hat! Wolly hats and scarves are great for babies, too.

Ideas for babies

Next Directory usually has some sort of tutu for sale, often in baby sizes. Tutus are adorable on little girls, no matter the age. Wolly hats, scarves, head bands (stretchy or normal, especially with flowers on). ASDA usually has tiny bikinis which are just plain adorable, especially on the chubby girls! Remember the nappy – bring a fresh one so you can get a few fleshy shots with a clean fresh nappy. Frilly pants over the nappy is even better.

Food and other messy stuff

Little ones really love tucking into a huge cake of their own and it looks great on camera. At the end of the shoot, you could let your little girl do her own makeup or if you want, bring water-based paints and a fist full of paintbrushes to let your little one go to town! Love gardening? Bring potted plants and flowers, gloves and a spade and let your kids to a little photo gardening!
